Migrate from a Facebook Profile to a Page in 2 Steps

If, like many, you fell into the temptation of creating a Facebook Profile instead of a Facebook Page, and now realize the grand benefits of having a Fan Page do not worry, we are here to help! Facebook has given us a tool to migrate and create our Fan Page without losing a single friend. Woohoo!

One catch though: your hostel’s published content (photos, videos, status updates) will not be migrated so before initiating the migration you need to download a copy of your Profile as a backup so you don’t lose all that valuable stuff.

Step 1) Download copy of your hostel’s Facebook Profile

On Facebook, select Account Settings from the dropdown menu (that appears when you click on the arrow in the upper right corner.) If not, click on this link or copy/paste it into your browser: https://www.facebook.com/settings.
At the bottom of the list on that page, click on Download a copy of your Facebook data.
Then, you’re going to receive an email with a link to download a copy of your Profile. The downloaded file should contain:

  • Your Profile data (contact information, interests, groups, etc)
  • Your photos & videos
  • List of your friends
  • Created events
  • All wall posts and comments

Step 2) Start Migration of Profile to Fan Page!

Copy and paste this link into your browser: https://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php?migrate
You’ll see a page like this:

Select the type of page to create the first box (Local Business or Place), then the “Hotel” category. “Hostel” isn’t offered yet, so we’ll just have to stick with this for now… Complete all the fields and Submit!

The nail-biting wait is a killer, but the fruits of your work will be sweet!

When you first see your new Page, you may only see a small number of your total friends now as fans. But don’t panic! In another couple of days, the migration will finish up and all of your old friends will now appear as fans. If after a couple of days, it still hasn’t worked, report it to Facebook by opening the dropdown menu again (from the top right corner) and clicking on Help. Then follow the steps to report a problem.

In fewer cases, but it can happen, the Fan Page or Profile will disappear altogether. But do not fear! Report it to Facebook as described above and they’ll take care of it.
